Temporary Space Launches with Retrospective of Richard Shelton

On View: March 21st – May 2nd, 2015

Richard Shelton, 50 Years of Painting 1964–2014 Part 1

Temporary Space, an entirely new art-viewing and buying platform that incorporates a physical and digital experience, will launch on March 21st with a unique exhibition celebrating the works of Richard Shelton. The exhibition will be organized into two acts featuring a diverse body of work created over the past 50 years. Richard Shelton, 50 Years of Painting will be on view through June 2015.

Richard Shelton has used the human figure to express his observations about the world and the times in which we live. Described as, “a master of the realist canvas that balances the feel of a dream with taut abstract composition,” his diverse body of work spans five decades and several series including Narrative, Corporate Narrative, Corporate Men, Portraits, Guns and Ammo, Hand Guns, Nude Expressionist, and Nude Geometric.

Richard Shelton, 50 Years of Painting will showcase the entire scope of Shelton’s career. Divided into two parts, this three month event will exhibit a broad selection of Mr. Shelton’s work from the past 50 years. Programming, including theatrical performances, a Naked Poetry Night, musical collaborations and more will enhance the visitor experience and provide insight into the artist’s process.

Each exhibition will incorporate an interactive on-site digital educational experience and a timeline that covers Shelton’s complete archived body of work. The timeline will be available for view onsite and also online, providing visitors an opportunity to learn and engage more deeply with Richard Shelton’s artwork and how his art evolved over his career. Richard Shelton’s timeline will span the last 50 years and features nearly 2500 works.

Temporary Space is an experimental platform that celebrates mid-to-late career artists that have been under-valued by the traditional art gallery system. The concept for Temporary Space was developed by a team of art professionals to address the artistic needs of artists in the 21st century.

Temporary Space is committed to mid-to-late career artists. “As an artist,” states Shelton, “I have firsthand experience in how business is conducted by galleries. Galleries are primarily interested in exhibiting an artist’s most recent work. Galleries function on the assumption that if the artwork didn’t sell when it was first exhibited the artwork is not salable. This emphasis upon the newest, most recent work of an artist makes sense when the artist being exhibited is “emerging” or working through an early stage of their art career. It makes no sense when exhibiting the art of a mature artist who has been producing art for 20 plus years. Temporary Space intends to reframe that assumption by providing the viewer with a virtual presentation of an artist’s entire body of work and letting them decide for themselves.”

Shelton’s paintings have been displayed in the Smithsonian Art Institute’s Hirschhorn Museum and other Museums in the United States and are in numerous private collections. Praised by critics for his technique and intensity, each of Shelton’s emotionally charged paintings offer a snippet of social commentary on life in the modern world

“Temporary Space hopes to form an alternative platform for exhibiting and selling art, just as the Impressionists, Expressionists, and Surrealists did in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century” states Shelton. “Our hope is that these new, unprecedented ideas will create a positive dialogue within the art community which will help bring about a change in the way artworks are exhibited and sold within the art establishment.”
