New Image Art presents Walking Home by Michelle Guintu

Michelle Guintu – Walking Home

Show Runs Through: February 1, 2014

New Image Art is pleased to announce San Francisco artist, Michelle Guintu’s first solo exhibition, “Walking Home”, opening December 14th, 2013, 7pm-10pm. The exhibition will showcase her impulse to create through her personal experience and obsession with popular culture.

When asked “what kind of art do you do” Guintu jumbles her words and things get awkward. Maybe because she plays with a little of everything, from sewing cigarettes together, to McDonald’s paper mache dolls, to her most recent tempera paintings of hip hop artists. Her work was once described as “kindercore” : part kindergarten part hardcore. Guintu uses references from her teenage years in a somewhat low-budget assemblage of sorts. Guintu installations takes on a funky satirical quality—embracing the past in a nostalgic reverence while making fun of pop culture.

San Francisco artist, Dennis Kernohan describes Michelle’s work as Free style 90’s pop iconography.

Guintu will be creating a sculptural installation as well as exhibiting her paintings of hip hop artists and rock stars.

Guintu graduated with a BFA in painting in 2006 from California State University East Bay. Currently she lives and works in San Francisco.
