Open Friday and Saturday during art weekend LA. Show Runs Through: February 9, 2013 In the gallery basement will be Karen Finley’s Sext Me If You Can, featuring the artwork created by Finley during her recent performance in Coagula Curatorial’s booth at the Miami Project Art Fair. Sext Me If You Can is a display of painted images that were “sexted” to Finley during a 2 day duration. Karen Finley’s Sext Me If You Can blurs traditional distinctions of intimacy, which become obsolete under the specter of technology and power relationships are in flux when freedom and control are stored on a microchip. Finley brings the process of art-making back into performance art, by boldy returning to the act of painting and the artist’s commitment to studio practice to the center of this technologically-enabled social intervention.
L2kontemporary is pleased to present the fourth solo exhibition at the gallery from Belgian born Los Angeles based artist Simone Gad. Open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during art weekend LA. Show Runs Through: February 9, 2013 After being introduced to the Fluxus movement in 1972 by Al Hansen, Gad began making collage and assemblage painting collages on vinyl. With these assemblage and collage works, along with painting and performance, Gad rose to prominence in the Los Angeles art scene throughout the 1970’s. An actress herself, Gad’s work focuses on Hollywood, exploring ideas of celebrity and stardom and providing unique insight into the world of fame, along with a not so flattering view of the soft white underbelly of Hollywood. Her career includes numerous exhibits throughout California and beyond, showing in Los Angeles at LAICA Downtown and Molly Barnes Gallery, among others. Gad is highly regarded in the Southern California art scene, being the recipient of numerous awards and grants, as well as being included in many publications and texts. Simone Gad’s previous exhibit, at Bleicher/Golighty, was in conjunction with the Pacific Standard Time initiative. L2kontemporary 990 N.
Despite this fragmentation, we move around the space, guided by the works themselves, sometimes through their dialogue and at other times through disaccord. While they all try to develop their own “black box,” they strive to become transitive works, able to generate a multi-layered net of connections with their surroundings.

The works of art reposition themselves in a larger field – the exhibition – ergo taking on new meanings. With its absurd and “pataphysical” desire to bring a formal contribution to the TV series, the exhibition LOST (in LA) in turn might find its place in a larger field and contribute to the definition of itself.

Bios:

Geo Wyeth is a New York City based musician and interdisciplinary performer. His work expands on pop music performance and contemporary song structure through experimenting with conceptual ideas of interruption, failure, and representation in performance, often with handmade props and sets. Much of his work is generated from a place of deep despair and irreverent humor for the world around him. He is an out female-to-male transsexual and was born to a white father and African-American mother. His works are darkly humorous and ecstatic meditations on the absurdity of these embodied experiences. Featured performances at: PS1 MoMA, the regular old MoMA, La MaMa ETC, Joe’s Pub, the SoHo Theater (London), Kate Werble Gallery, Le Poisson Rouge, Marianne Bosky Gallery, as well as numerous music, theater, and art performance venues worldwide. He was born in 1984 in New York City.

Narcissister is a Brooklyn-based artist and performer. Wearing mask and merkin, she works at the intersection of performance art, burlesque, dance, and visual art. She actively integrates her prior experience as a professional dancer and commercial artist with her current art practices in a range of creative media, including collage, photography, video art, and music. In addition being a featured performer at The Box, she has presented work in New York at The New Museum, The Kitchen, and at Abrons Art Center and at many nightclubs, galleries, and alternative art spaces. Narcissister was a re-performer of Marina Abramovic’s Luminosity piece as part of The Artist is Present retrospective at MoMA. Narcissister has also presented her work internationally at the Music Biennale in Zagreb, Croatia, at Chicks on Speed’s Girl Monster Festival, at The Festival of Women in Ljubljana, Slovania, at Warehouse 09, Copenhagen’s first live art festival, and at the Camp/Anti-Camp festival in Berlin, among many others. Her art videos have also been included in gallery shows and film festivals worldwide. Her film The Self-Gratifier won an award for “Best Use of a Sex Toy” at The 2008 Good Vibrations Erotic Film Festival.

Interested in troubling the divide between popular entertainment and experimental art, Narcissister appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2011. Narcissister is currently in FORE at The Studio Museum. “Narcissister is You”, her first solo gallery exhibition opens at Envoy Enterprises in New York in Jan 2013, and she will present a new evening-length work at Abrons Art Center in March 2013.

With this engrossing documentary, director/curator/author James Crump paints an illustrious portrait of the complex ties between these three visionaries. As the only one of them still living, Patti Smith — alongside such luminaries as Dominick Dunne, Richard Tuttle, Eugenia Parry, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and Ralph Gibson — reminisces about a time when New York City’s CBGB’s, Studio 54 and the Meatpacking District (where a gay/S&M underworld had emerged) were all thriving.
